Now the big question is whether Rohit Sharma, Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir have the right bowling combination for the Champions Trophy.
It is a given that the pitch at the Dubai International Stadium, for the games of the Champions Trophy that India is going to play, has supported the bowlers, though it has done so more for the faster than the slower bowlers. India has picked more spinners than pacers for the ICC event.
So far in the ongoing ILT20 matches, there have been four games at the venue and the pacers have claimed 41 wickets against a mere 8 by the spinners with an average first innings score of 146 runs. Out of the four games played at that venue the chasing side has won thrice. On Saturday (January 18), Agarkar’s selection committee picked a seamer all rounder with three pacers and Hardik Pandya for the game against four specialist spinners.
It appears that Rohit Sharma has to some extent over focused on favouring the spinners. He seems to intend to employ the same tactics in the 50 over Champions Trophy as those that won him the Twenty20 World Cup last year. The Indian think tank seems to be banking on Ravindra Jadeja and his team being the core attacking force of the side in the tournament because of the unpredictability of spearhead Jasprit Bumrah’s availability.
As much as people could speculate this about the spinners playing on UAE wickets, the captain has opted for a spin-friendly side which he has done before.
The Indian captain does not contend that the attack is spin heavy, but he offers a bit of a different account on it. He categorizes them as all-rounders and not only spinners. The fact that we have these all-rounders, spinning all-rounders, it just gives us a little bit of depth as well, says the captain.
Kuldeep is one of the x-factors from last year, was the leading wicket taker for the team with 10 scalps in 5 matches, which is almost five along with what Axar did who got nine wickets in six games. Jadeja picked up just a solitary wicket, but it was at a crucial time. Chahal did not got to play any games. But Rohit is expecting runs from Jadeja, Axar, Sundar Kuldeep and other three spinners, with some plus quality overs.
Unfortunately, the reality is there are not very many seaming all-rounders available. The objective is to bat as long as possible while maintaining a solid bowling attack. All these guys we picked are qualified to bat and bowl. No their roles are not going to be bowler or batter. They have done it from a position where the team and I are pretty confident in what they actually do and their specific position. It is these sorts of things that makes it so easy.
The captain is pleased with the breadth of resources available for India’s bowling attack, including Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, and Pandya, as well as the four spinners.
“When you have quality like that, your squad appears to have a lot of depth. The quality of the spin allows you to cover all bases.”
The most significant aspect of the selection is that head coach Gambhir seems to be supporting Rohit’s philosophy much like Rahul Dravid was last year and this is a positive signal that the captain and the coach are in sync. There has been much speculation of late over the equation between the captain and the coach, and Rohit has emphasized that Gambhir trusts him completely and the way he operates.
“I can assure you that both of us are very clear about what needs to be done. I am not going to sit here and talk what goes into every game tactically, but it’s pretty obvious in my head, and Gautam is someone who trusts what the captain does on the pitch. Basic discussions happen only off the field, in the stands or even in the locker room. But once we are on the pitch, everything is contingent on what I achieve. That is the confidence we have in one another and that is how it should so be. That’s pretty much it. For more Cricket Latest Update, Click Here
