Nortje’s back injury disqualifies him from the Champions Trophy

Following his disqualification from the Champions Trophy, Anrich Nortje was removed from consideration for the SA20 and is likely to be absent from the tournament.

A back injury was the reason this fast bowler would be excluded from the competition and rest of SA20, as announced on Wednesday by CSA.

As per the statement, Nortje “underwent scans on Monday afternoon, which revealed the extent of the injury.” It is expected that the player will not be able to recover in time to compete for the champions trophy. On February 21, South Africa are scheduled to play their first match of the tournament against Afghanistan in Karachi.

Nortje’s inclusion was the most significant highlight of South Africa’s team announcement on Monday. He made his last appearance on the field on December 2 while featuring in the Abu Dhabi T10, while in the international stage he has not played since June of last year.

To avoid T20 cricket for the 2024–2025 season, he made the conscious decision to work on his body that tended to sustain injuries more regularly and also shift his attention to further enhancing his franchise career.

Nortje suffered a toe injury while practicing in the net during South Africa’s white-ball series against Pakistan, owing to a yorker bowled by Davin Miller.

Nortje has faced a barrage of numerous issues which sidelined him, and this injury is the most recent of them. The cricketing world recognizes him as one of the fastest and a fan favourite bowler, however his absence from the ODI World cup is concerning.
