Thanks to a brilliant five-wicket haul from Mohammed Shami and a masterful century from Shubman Gill, India cleanly defeated Bangladesh in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Although Bangladesh was able to fight their way out of a difficult spot with excellent innings from Towhid Hridoy, it wasn’t enough to put India on the backfoot. Unfortunately, India did deal with some issues in their middle overs but ultimately sharpened up with Gill and KL Rahul performing fantastically towards the end.

From the very beginning of the contest, Bangladesh struggled. Everything went downhill when Shami and Harshit Rana got two wickets in the first two overs, setting the score at 2/2. Our friendly neighborhood Axar Patel only made matters even worse during the powerplays. His left arm spin technique managed to dismiss Tanzim Hasan and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim in two balls. He almost hat-tricked after Jaker Ali edged his ball to Rohit Sharma but was instead greeted with a dropped catch. Capping off an already dire situation, Bangladesh had managed to lose 5 wickets within 35 runs. For more Latest Blogs; Read Here
The side batting was in dire need for a stand and they got two rescuers in Jaker and Hridoy. There was a lot of time left, so both the batters were happy to block out overs to make sure that Bangladesh did not surrender easily.

Bangladesh look to make an impact once again on the big stage
In time, Hridoy began to express himself by crossing a few frontiers, including hitting boundaries off back-to-back overs. By now, their innings run rate was above 4 for the first time, coming in the 40th over. Shami managed to get Jaker and ended the rather ominious 154-run partnership. Rishad Hossain’s mini cameo then lifted the total past the 200 mark but Bangladesh did not get the finish they would have preferred with Hridoy losing steam as a consequence of cramps. While he reached triple digits, Shami finalized the match to complete his five-fer.
Bangladesh had a lot of ground to make up and were immediately feeling the heat, given the fact that they simply had 228 runs to defend. Both Rohit and Gill went after the bowling attack in the Power Play Pover in the first stage of the innings. Both of them started off with a few runs, however, Rohit scored more than Gill in the initial stages of the match. Two boundaries off Mustafizur Rahman helped him go past 11000 runs in the format. He also thoroughly enjoyed his clash with the left-arm seamer, smashing five more boundaries off his next two overs to get to 37. Gill ripped into Tanzim hasan with a six over deep midwicket as India sped to 65/0 in the first nine overs with Gill bringing up the fifty with that six.

Rohit’s charge was stopped in its tracks by Taskin Ahmed after the rampaging Indian skipper mistimed a shot in the last over of the fielding restrictions. The scoring rate did dip considerably though in the next ten overs after the introduction of spin by Bangladesh. On a surface which had already shown signs of slowing down, both Gill and Kohli batted with a lot of caution without any real scoreboard pressure. But that cautious phase has had a couple of wickets fall which kept the Indian innings on its toes. First, it was Kohli once again falling to a legspinner and Iyer then miscued one to the relief of Mustafizur who had a tough night where a lot of runs were scored against him.
With Axar coming in yet again with the merry go round and spin being the flavor of the hour, he did not seem to have much of an impact as he had no clean contact with the googly and ended up losing his wicket. Now with India still needing 85 at that stage, one more wicket would have definitely put the game in the balance. But Rahul kept on in the same manner as Gill did from the other end and put in a lot of time and simply nudged the ball around showing a lot of patience.
Bangladesh also did not do themselves any favors when Jaker gifted India by dropping Rahul at an important stage with the batting side still needing 63 runs. Rahul made sure he made a big score as he belted Rishad in an over for a six. Boundaries started flowing more frequently after that, as Gill reached the 90s with a brilliant pick up shot of his which cleared the deep midwicket fence. Right before Rahul finished the game off with one last huge six, Gill managed to bring up his slowest hundred in ODIs, which is probably his most monumental century so far given the context.
Brief scores: Bangladesh 228 in 49.4 overs (Towhid Hridoy 100, Jaker Ali 68; Mohammed Shami 5/53, Harshit Rana 3/31) lost to India 231/4 in 46.3 overs (Shubman Gill 101*, KL Rahul 41*; Rishad Hossain 2/38) by six wickets
