As Gavi was in a press conference, a colleague asked him for his opinion on the worrying trends that arise with the increasing comparisons between Messi and Yamal and he rest assured whilst Yamal is gifted, he is still unfinished. Gavi made it clear while he considers the young winger to be one of the best in the world, he places Messi at an unreachable level.

“In my view, he is the second best in the world just after Messi,” Gavi said some time ago in an interview with Sport. It’s still important to note, as he was, that the comparison of Yamal to Messi is not straight forward. “Lamine is very good, the best at this moment. But when you compare him with Messi, that’s just silly because there can be only one”, he said.

Gavi was of the view that in the same manner that one cannot substitute Messi, neither will he Spurs, Xavi or Iniesta. All were irreplaceable.

“Messi is exceptional. Likewise, there is only one Xavi, one Iniesta, or one Busquets,” he said.

Even though Gavi admitted the latest impression Yamal made in the most recent Barcelona cup contests and his great summer in Euro 2024, it is imperative to carve one’s own identity.
