India’s undertaking in the Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to start on February 20 with a match against Bangladesh. The T20 World Cup 2024 champion India has already announced their squad for the tournament as Rohit Sharma will be looking to lead the team to their second ICC trophy in under a year.
Team India has named Shubman Gill as the vice-captain of the team. This raises expectations of people that Shubman Gill has been given the ODI captaincy which makes sense as he is also the vice captain. But, there is one report that talks about replacing Rohit with someone else entirely.

As per a Dainik Bhaskar report, Indian cricket team’s all rounder Hardik Pandya is likely to be the captain for India’s team for Champions Trophy 2025 if India is unsuccessful in winning it. It is no secret that head coach Gautam Gambhir has expressed a desire for Pandya to fill the vice captain role on the Indian national side. However, captain Rohit Sharma along with chief selector Aji Agarkar were very set on giving the role of vice captain to Shubman Gill.
Hardik Pandya Might Replace Suryakumar Yadav
The report also mentions that after Suryakumar Yadav’s dip in form as an Indian T20I captain, there are speculations about Hardik Pandya replacing him as the captain for the national side.
Hardik Pandya during the T20 World Cup 2024 served as Rohit Sharma’s understudy and from 2022 to 2023, he captained India in several T20I matches without Rohit Sharma. However, after the retirement of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav was appointed the captain for the Indian T20I side.
As per the report, a number of stakeholders from the BCCI, including Gautam Gambhir, have argued that it was hard on Hardik Pandya to take away the captaincy in lieu of his fitness issues. He clearly was in great form and should have been kept as the captain. Read more about this click here
