Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are set to announce their captain for IPL 2025 on Thursday in Bengaluru.
The new captain’s name remains unconfirmed as of now, however, it’s safe to say that Virat Kohli seems to have the edge for the position considering the franchise he led from 2013 to 2021. He also stepped down from the position, but has served as a stand-in captain during three matches in IPL 2023.

Another candidate could be Rajat Patidar middle-order batsman who has been plying his trade with RCB since 2021 and was recently retained before the mega auction. Patidar, 31, was also the captain of his state team Madhya Pradesh during the 2024 25 seasons of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Additionally, RCB needs to fill the vacant captain’s position after the non-retention of Faf du Plessis who served them from 2022 to 2024. The 40-year-old was present at the auction, but the capitals acquired him at base price without a bidding war.
Du Plessis succeeded Kohli, and recenlty, Virat Kohli ended his 9 seasons with RCB in 2021 alongside his captaincy. As per now, Kohli has been the captain for 143 IPL matches with RCB, out of which, DDhoni led the others. His overall win-loss record as a captain is 68 wins and 70 losses alongside 4 no-results. While RCB still seek for their first IPL title, they advanced to the finals in 2016 where he scored an outstanding 973 runs throughout the season. His 2024 IPL scored makes him the number 1 in IPL as well. He ended with 741 runs and a 154.69 strike rate which aided RCB get to the playoffs where they were subsequently knocked out in the Eliminator.
Besides RCB, both the KKR and the Delhi Capitals placed in the same bracket are on a wait for the appointment of captains for the new season. Captain from the previous season, Shreyas Iyer is going to be the captain for Punjab Kings this season, whereas former DC captain Rishabh Pant currently heads the Lucknow Super Giants.
