Ricky Ponting passes massive verdict on Steve Smith vs Virat Kohli debate, names 'Top Best of his generation'

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting persons believe that it is not easy to go against the numbers when considering Steve smith as the greatest player of his generation.

Smith who regained his touch during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy held against India during the year 2024-25 has achieved greater heights in Test format. During the first day of the first Test match against Sri Lanka he scored his 10,000th Test run and became a member of the exclusive clan of Australian legends Ponting, Allan Border, and Steve Waugh who accomplished this milestone.

Following the 10,000th run, Smith’s single helped the Australians who were present in Galle to applaud their star. He too raised his bat to every corner of ground.

Pontings opinion makes sense as Smith is a member of the Fab Four and has why splendid achievements under his name. Addressing the question as to why he considers Smith the best player of his generation, Ponting makes the claim that the flamboyant batsman Smith has arguably wrought the most determination of his peers throughout his career.

Is he the best player of his generation? It’s a hard argument to contend. “Joe Root is the other one now and [Kane] Williamson’s record is outstanding as well. Joe’s last couple of years have elevated him right back up there, I think,” Seven commentator Ponting said as quoted from The Sydney Morning Herald.

According to him, “Five or six years ago, when this big four emerged, with [Virat] Kohli being one of those as well, Joe was probably down near the bottom part of that because he hadn’t made the hundreds the other guys had made, but he’s made 19 hundreds in the past four years.”

He is the fifth-quickest to scale the milestone,Doing it in 205 innings, he follows only Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara and Ponting.

As Ponting puts it, “This is a challenging one, but if you asked any Englishman, he’d say Joe Root while any Aussie would say Steve Smith and he is undoubtedly one of the greatest players. For Kiwis, the answer is Kane Williamson. Therefore, when evaluating solely based on numbers, it is quite hard to dispute his accomplishments.” Its All Content Provided by 1xbetfair
